Alcohol-related liver disease is currently the most common reason for liver transplantation in the United States. In recent years, high-risk drinking of alcohol-defined as exceeding daily drinking limits (more than 4 or 5 standard drinks for women and men, respectively) at least weekly for a whole year-has increased in nearly all sociodemographic groups, especially in women.
Two different research groups have independently made the same important discoveries on how Alzheimer's disease spreads in the brain, according to a February 2 New York Times story. The groups' findings have the potential to give us a much more sophisticated understanding of what goes wrong in Alzheimer's disease and, more importantly, what can be done to prevent or repair damage in the brain.
The Malaria Policy Center's "Malaria Watch" blog describes comments made by USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah during a recent global health community call. During the call, Shah "stressed that to solve global health issues there needs to be shared 'responsibility across all partners.' Partnerships help 'save money, and saving money can save lives,'" the blog notes.
