Biomedical engineers at Duke University have recruited an unlikely ally in the fight against the deadliest form of brain cancer - a strain of salmonella that usually causes food poisoning.
Ovarian cancer cells are "addicted" to a family of proteins produced by the notorious oncogene, MYC, and blocking these Myc proteins halts cell proliferation in the deadliest cancer of the female reproductive system, according to a presentation by University of California, Berkeley scientists at the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) 48th Annual Meeting, Dec. 13-17, 2008 in San Francisco.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) have found that Chlamydia pneumoniae, a bacterium linked to heart disease and capable of causing chronic inflammation, was present in the diseased eye tissue of five out of nine people with neovascular, or "wet," age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Debiopharm Group, a Swiss-based global biopharmaceutical group of companies active in drug development, GMP manufacturing of proprietary drugs, diagnostics, and investments, has announced its decision to expand and optimize activities at Debiopharm Research & Manufacturing S.A., its industrial development and production facility in Martigny (Valais, Switzerland), through acquisition of industrial high-value added activities or companies in the pharmaceutical, biotech or medtech field.
Heart failure is a major public health burden in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with substantial variation in the presentation, causes, management, and outcomes of heart failure across different LMICs, according to a study published in this week's PLOS Medicine.
