Performing delicate surgery in the womb, months before birth, can substantially improve outcomes for children with a common, disabling birth defect of the spine. Experts at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia co-led a new landmark study showing that fetal surgery for spina bifida greatly reduces the need to divert fluid from the brain, improves mobility and improves the chances that a child will be able to walk independently.
A new study by Canadian researchers has revealed that not only are many cancer survivors inactive, some are also obese and this could have a negative affect on the control of their disease.
For the first time, researchers have identified an association between pregnant women's exposure to a nearly ubiquitous class of chemicals known as phthalates and adverse effects on genital development in their male children.
Physician-scientists at four University of California Health medical centers - UC San Diego Health, UC San Francisco, UC Irvine Health and UC Davis Health - have begun recruiting participants for a Phase II clinical trial to investigate the safety and efficacy of treating adult patients with COVID-19 with remdesivir, an antiviral drug that has shown activity in animal models and human clinical trials of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Ebola, Marburg and other viruses.
