Obesity, long known as a cause of type II diabetes, may accelerate the onset of type 1 diabetes in some - but not all - groups of younger patients, according to research at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and six clinical sites nationally.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Voraxaze (glucarpidase) to treat patients with toxic levels of methotrexate in their blood due to kidney failure.
Episiotomy is often called the unkindest cut of all. The procedure involves cutting the skin and muscles of the perineal area, the tissue between a woman's vagina and anus, while she is giving birth. It was once thought to be less painful and damaging than allowing the tissue to tear naturally.
Many low-income countries are unlikely to reach the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) health targets set for 2015; the main reasons for this are fragile health systems and insufficient investments in understanding how to strengthen them, suggest authors of a Public Health article in this week's issue of THE LANCET.
