Biochips carrying thousands of DNA fragments are widely used for examining genetic material. Experts would also like to have biochips on which proteins are anchored. This requires a gel layer which can now be produced industrially.
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have shown that patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are better able to remember new verbal information when it is provided in the context of music even when compared to healthy, older adults. The findings, which currently appear on-line in Neuropsychologia, offer possible applications in treating and caring for patients with AD.
Two years ago, University of Wisconsin-Madison scientists reported they had suppressed epileptic seizures in rats by giving them a glycolytic-inhibitor, inhibiting the brain's ability to turn sugar into excess energy and blocking the expression of seizure-related genes.
USAID's "IMPACTblog" interviews Regina Ombam, head of strategy for the Kenya National AIDS Control Council (NACC), and Irene Mukui, the antiretroviral therapy (ART) program manager for Kenya's National AIDS and STI Control Program, regarding a Cabinet memorandum prepared by the NACC in March that outlines ways to raise funds for HIV programming.
