Icagen, Inc. today announced that it has been awarded approximately $733,000 of federal government grants under the qualifying therapeutic discovery project program under section 48D of the Internal Revenue Code. Conventional antidepressant treatments generally require three to four weeks to become effective, thus the discovery of treatments with a more rapid onset is a major goal of biological psychiatry. The first drug found to produce rapid improvement in mood was the NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, ketamine.
Repeated infusions of ketamine treatments for migraines or pain was not associated with increased risk for hepatotoxicity or psychomimetic adverse drug events (ADEs), according to research from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
Researchers at the University of Southampton have shed new light on why and how a new class of drug is effective at fighting off leukaemia.
