The Cell Therapy Catapult has published its annual analysis of the UK preclinical and clinical research landscapes with the release of its UK Clinical and Pre-Clinical Trials Databases. These show a 24% rise in the number of clinical trials and an increase of 22% in the number of pre-clinical projects. Sector growth came in the key areas of oncology, neurology, ophthalmology and cardiovascular.
Fred Sawe, deputy director of the Kenya Medical Research Institute/Walter Reed Project HIV Program in Kericho, Kenya, and Mitchell Warren, executive director of AVAC: Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention, report in Global Health Magazine that "[t]he Department of the Army is set to slash 73 percent of the U.S. Military HIV Research Program's (MHRP) Army research budget for FY13 through FY17," a move they write is a threat to HIV vaccine progress.
Researchers from the University of Houston, in collaboration with others, have designed a "catch and kill" air filter that can trap the virus responsible for COVID-19, killing it instantly.
