One of the most difficult skills a neurologist must learn is how to diagnosis brain death and communicate the bad news to family members.
Improving "health literacy" could help improve patient outcomes and quality. This literacy is "the limited ability to understand the technical jargon, the orders, the prescriptions and the forms coming from doctors, nurses, pharmacists and insurance companies. This failure to communicate leads to missed doctor appointments, medications taken incorrectly, instructions ignored — all contributing to worsening health."
A strategy that combines two effective colorectal cancer screening methods, fecal immunological test and colonoscopy, may improve prevention and detection of colorectal cancer and reduce costs, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.
The transmission of signals within cells is dependent on cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) as an important secondary messenger. German scientists have now developed an RNA that binds cGMP. As reported in the journal Angewandte Chemie, it is possible to suppress the cGMP signal cascade in genetically modified cells that produce this RNA.
The Canadian Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology recently announced that Stephen D. Risavy is the recipient of the 2010 RHR Kendall Award. Stephen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Industrial/Organizational Psychology program at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Sponsored by RHR International, a world leader in executive and organizational development, this award is presented for the best student paper of the year in Canadian I/O Psychology.
