According to a study published in the Lancet on Saturday, researchers from the University of Pelotas in Brazil tracking progress toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5 - which promote maternal and child health - "discovered that the most equitable intervention was early initiation of breastfeeding, and that the attendance of a skilled person at birth proved to be the least equitable intervention," Medical News Today reports.
A history of smoking is associated with an increased risk of metastatic disease in patients treated with radiotherapy (XRT) for prostate cancer (CaP), according to a report in the online version of the BJU International.
New understanding of a protein that spurs the growth of pancreatic cancer could lead to a new vaccine against the deadly disease, said researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in a report appearing in the current edition of the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.
Ambry Genetics (Ambry), a leader in clinical genetic diagnostics and genetics software solutions, has announced new data affirming the effectiveness of multi-gene panel testing (MGPT) in identifying TP53 gene mutations in people who might otherwise not have been tested. The findings, presented as a poster at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) 2015 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, includes data collected from more than 25,000 individuals having TP53 testing, of which 187 were positive. The tested cohort is the largest to date from a single testing laboratory.
Many research groups have and are investigating main protease inhibitors as antiviral drugs, and in a paper recently uploaded to the bioRxiv* preprint server, a team of researchers examine the crystal structure of the protein while bound to various viral substrate peptides (P1-4). In doing so, they reveal the way in which the bound peptide sequence can direct and modulate enzyme activity, providing new templates towards antiviral drug design.
