Researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre discovered a protein switch which can trigger a cascade of events leading to heart failure, pointing to a new direction for drug development.
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile duct in the liver. The clear cell subtype of ICC is a rare cancer; until now, only 8 cases have been reported. The number of reports is so small that a detail description of clear cell ICC is valuable.
AmeriCares and Baxter International Inc. have teamed to deliver additional lifesaving intravenous solutions to Haiti as part of their ongoing effort to stem the cholera outbreak. AmeriCares has been working around the clock to distribute IV solutions, oral rehydration salts, antibiotics, hand sanitizers and other critical aid since the outbreak was reported in October.
For the first time, Whitehead Institute researchers have shown definitively that mutations associated with prion diseases are sufficient to cause a transmissible neurodegenerative disease.
When the mucosal surfaces in the lungs of healthy people come into contact with allergenic substances, so-called regulatory T cells also known as Treg cells, are activated. These are capable of actively preventing the development of allergies.
