Overweight Latino children who consume lots of sugar-especially in sugary drinks-show signs of beta cell decline, a precursor of type 2 diabetes, according to researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
As many as 25,000 registered nurses from California and Minnesota have issued one-day strike notices Friday morning over patient care issues in contract negotiations at their facilities, the California Nurses Association and Minnesota Nurses Association announced today. All the nurses are members of National Nurses United, the nation's largest professional association and union for RNs.
Researchers demonstrated the success of a fully implantable wireless medical device, the Stentrode™ brain-computer interface (BCI), designed to allow patients with severe paralysis to resume daily tasks - including texting, emailing, shopping and banking online - without the need for open brain surgery.
Using the Allergy Chip co-developed by MedUni Vienna, sensitization to allergens can be detected early on. This normally requires a doctor taking a blood sample for subsequent analysis in a laboratory equipped with the Chip.
An increased number of seniors have "turned to credit cards and home equity to pay medical bills" at a time when "more employers are cutting back on retiree medical and pension benefits," USA Today reports.
