Scientists have long known that high blood sugar levels from diabetes damage blood vessels in the eye, but they didn't know why or how. Now a Michigan State University scientist has discovered the process that causes retinal cells to die, which could lead to new treatments that halt the damage.
Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALNY), a leading RNAi therapeutics company, and Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT), the world's leading developer of medical devices, announced today the presentation of new pre-clinical research findings from their Huntington's disease program at the 2009 World Congress on Huntington's Disease held September 12-15, 2009 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center's Institute for Reproductive Health are recruiting as many as 1,200 women to study, in real time, a smartphone app that calculates a woman's chance for pregnancy on a daily basis.
Scientists have combined chemistry and biology research techniques to explain how certain bacteria grow structures on their surfaces that allow them to simultaneously cause illness and protect themselves from the body's defenses.
