With elections coming up in Haiti, major earthquakes, a cholera epidemic and fears of political violence rear their ugly heads in the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. Electoral officials still say the presidential and legislative polls will go ahead as scheduled on November 28, despite the cholera outbreak. The epidemic has killed more than 290 people and sickened more than 4,000 since last week, triggering a major multinational treatment and prevention operation.
In a study to be presented on Feb. 6 at 8:15 a.m. CST, at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting -, in New Orleans, researchers will report findings that recommend expectant monitoring instead of immediate delivery for women with gestational hypertension or preeclampsia between 34 and 37 weeks of pregnancy.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that women with a gene mutation linked to breast and ovarian cancer face lower risks of developing such cancer after receiving mastectomies or having their ovaries removed, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Researchers from the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology have shown that the number of mutations in healthy and leukemic blood stem cells does not differ.
