The New York Times: The health care industry generates billions of pounds of garbage each year, and disposing of it all has become a problem. "The problem, fueled by a shift toward the use of disposables that made it simple to keep treatment practices sterile, has been an open secret for years, but getting the health care industry to change its habits has not been easy. No organization currently tracks how much medical trash the United States produces — the last known estimate, from the early 1990s, was two million tons a year."
Stellaris Health Network said today that its contract with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield expired at midnight March 31st ending a long-standing relationship with the prominent health insurance provider that is owned by WellPoint Inc., one of the nation's largest health insurance conglomerates. The expiration follows several months of unsuccessful efforts to reach a new agreement giving the hospitals reimbursement rates that are consistent with those being paid by other health insurers in the market.
GlycoMimetics, Inc. (GMI), a clinical-stage biotechnology company that is developing a new class of glycobiology-based therapies for a broad range of indications, today announced that a pilot study of the company's lead candidate, GMI-1070, is underway in sickle cell patients. The first patients in this pilot study were treated at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland in California.
Researchers have developed a specialized glass strip covered in "hairy" nanoparticles that can detect pollution of water by toxic metals, such as mercury.
Medical reversal—when accepted medical interventions are abandoned because they are found to be ineffective—is the "most important problem in medicine today," according to the authors of a new book: Ending Medical Reversal.
