According to a report by charity Age UK, spending on social care for the elderly has been cut by around £600m this year. The research was based on 139 council responses under the Freedom of Information Act, and has uncovered an 8.4% cut to elderly care budgets.
Since the 1960s, researchers have been interested in the possibility of treating type 1 diabetes by transplanting islet cells - the pancreatic cells that are responsible for producing insulin when blood glucose concentration increases.
Enigma Diagnostics announced today that it has commenced clinical trials for its intended point of care Enigma ML Influenza A/B detection assay. Enigma will submit its application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval of the assay in 2012.
"Many of Africa's anti-malaria drugs are fake or of poor quality, weakening a crucial battle against the world's deadliest disease, a new investigation has found," GlobalPost reports, adding, "Many of the drugs - even those approved by the World Health Organization - are Chinese fakes or low-quality variants that failed quality tests, according to two new studies released today."
Excluding deer could be a counterproductive strategy for controlling tick-borne infections, because the absence of deer from small areas may lead to an increase in ticks, rapidly turning the area into a potential disease hotspot, according to a team of U.S. and Italian researchers.
