After a spate of random shootings and gun homicides, Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, along with doctors and medical professionals, convened at Children's Memorial Hospital to send an urgent plea to state lawmakers to require background checks on all handgun sales in order save lives and reduce escalating health care costs related to gun violence.
The first randomised trial to measure the impact of the rapid Xpert MTB/RIF test for tuberculosis in a real-life clinical setting finds that it can be accurately performed by a non-specialist with minimal training, improves same-day diagnosis and time to starting treatment, and increases the number of people who start treatment after testing positive on day 1 by 50%, compared with conventional TB diagnostics.
While everybody needs some sun exposure to produce vitamin D (not to mention fun) sunburn and excessive ultra violet (UV) light exposure can not only cause damage to your skin, but sometimes lead to cancer. Michael Marchetti, M.D., of the Emergency Department at Bayshore Community Hospital, and Kevin Roma, M.D. of Riverview Medical Center's Emergency Department share their advice on safe fun in the sun.
While access to mental health services may be limited by financial, logistical and/or practical factors among recently migrated families, a new study by University of Houston psychology researchers suggests that maximizing sleep can offer psychological benefit to adolescents in this at-risk group.
