Only half of all Americans age 50 and over have had a colonoscopy, one of several common screening tests for colon cancer, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Invatec, a comprehensive innovator of interventional products, today launched their latest self-expanding peripheral stent system, Maris Plus. The Maris Plus stent has a "lesion-specific" design with larger sizes to meet the clinical requirements of the iliac region. The Maris Plus becomes the sixth stent platform now marketed by Invatec for the treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), greatly optimizing visibility, flexibility and ease of use for the physician.
Noting the successes of the first 10 years of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as the funding challenges it faces moving forward, Elisha Dunn-Georgiou, vice president of advocacy at Population Action International, writes in an opinion piece in GlobalPost's "Global Pulse" blog that the Fund "has always upheld the idea that their work contributes to achievement of all of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)" and "always accepted and considered proposals that include reproductive, maternal, and child health interventions, when countries could demonstrate that they would have an impact on AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria."
For the first time, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has been directly implicated in the pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although 5-HT is predominantly known as a neurotransmitter within the central nervous system, new evidence points to additional important functions for serotonin in the periphery.
Reuters on Monday examined the practice of surrogate motherhood in India, where surrogacy services are "far cheaper than in the West."
