The Pennsylvania Pediatric Medical Device Consortium has announced its latest round of seed grants to companies developing medical devices for children. The Consortium chose four companies from 11 finalists in a competition to receive seed grants of $50,000 each.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center geriatricians found that when medical care for frail elders with advanced illness shifts to the home, total Medicare costs were reduced by 17 percent during a two-year period.
Models of human disease are beneficial for medical research, but have limitations in predicting the way a drug will behave within the human body using data from non-human models because of inherent differences between species.
A policy designed to reduce hospital readmissions through financial penalties was associated with a significant increase in post-discharge mortality for patients with heart failure and pneumonia, according to a large-scale study by researchers in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Smith Center for Outcomes Research in Cardiology.
