A growing body of research suggests that exposure to air pollution in the earliest stages of life is associated with negative effects on cognitive abilities.
Until now, patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction – the most common type of heart failure in the elderly – have had no access to evidenced-based treatments. For the first time, a large clinical trial led by Prof. Dr. Stefan Anker from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has identified a drug which has a distinctly positive effect on prognosis. In patients affected by this type of heart failure, the drug – empagliflozin – reduces the risk of hospitalization or cardiovascular death by 21 percent. The results of this research have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
A commentary published in the journal Cell summarizes international data on vaccine effectiveness against new severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants. Evidence shows that the currently approved vaccines continue to be effective in preventing severe and symptomatic illness — even with the widely circulating Delta variant.
Acupuncture or counselling, provided alongside usual care, could benefit patients with depression, according to a study by researchers at the University of York.
