A new study confirms that chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases the already-high risk of serious cardiovascular events in diabetic patients with damage to the large blood vessels and suggests that treatment with the anti-diabetic drug pioglitazone may help to lower this risk, reports the January Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
A pilot study shows that a protein-rich meal replacement made from soy, yogurt, and honey (Almased) helps patients with type 2 diabetes lose weight, gain better control of their blood sugar, and decrease their daily insulin dose. Patients in the study also lowered their body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, and fasting glucose levels, while improving their HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
Two University of Houston researchers, working to find cancer cures, received grants from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas, the organization that funds groundbreaking cancer research and prevention programs in the state.
Cedars-Sinai's new Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion, designed to bring patient care and translational research together in one site and encourage scientists and physicians to collaborate when developing new treatments, has won a prestigious design award from the American Institute of Architects California Council.
