Adding another reason for people to watch their blood pressure, a new study from North Carolina State University shows that increased blood pressure in older adults is directly related to decreased cognitive functioning, particularly among seniors with already high blood pressure.
In this post on the PLoS "Speaking of Medicine" blog, Grania Brigden, the tuberculosis adviser to the Medecins Sans Frontieres Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines, writes that while "[t]his year's Global Tuberculosis Control report shows the beginning of a decline in the global tuberculosis epidemic, ... there is a stark lack of data for children," continuing, "Without a clear estimate of the magnitude of the problem it is hard to motivate governments, researchers and donors."
America's biopharmaceutical research companies are intensifying research into rare diseases, which often are among the most devastating to patients and complex for researchers. A record 460 medicines for rare diseases are in late stages of the pipeline, either in clinical trials or awaiting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review, according to a report released today by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
