What we anxiously fear in the influenza virus - a cross between two strains, resulting in a new variant we have no resistance against - has occurred in another pathogen, the Leishmania parasite. This was uncovered by researchers of the Institute of Tropical Medicine.
BioLife Solutions Inc. has announced that it has submitted a Master File to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Company's HypoThermosol preservation media product.
This week, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization updated and strengthened its statement related to the use of rotavirus vaccines in Canada. Rotavirus infection is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children under the age of three. The NACI statement now includes Grade A recommendations (good evidence to recommend immunization) for healthy and preterm infants.
Officials have recorded more than 70 cholera cases in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and fear for a substantial rise in numbers if the epidemic continues. Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Deputy Director Jon Kim Andrus said, "As of Monday, the Ministry of Health was reporting more than 9,100 hospitalized cases and some 583 deaths in some 240 communities… These include 73 cases reported in Port-au-Prince. We expect these numbers to continue to rise as more cases are detected."
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) has voluntarily executed a product recall of certain lots of BD Q-Syte™ Luer Access Devices and BD Nexiva™ Closed IV Catheter Systems. Use of the affected devices may cause an air embolism or leakage of blood and/or therapy, which may result in serious injury or death. This field corrective action included notification to customers worldwide by letter. Neither the costs anticipated with the recall, nor the impact on BD's business, are expected to be material.
