International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the National Bipolar Foundation (NBF). NBF was founded by F. Marc Kullman in 2005. After being diagnosed in 1997 with Bipolar Disorder, he was determined to become a spokesperson for the disease, with hopes of eradicating the stigma associated with the illness.
Gene therapy that boosts the ability of brain cells to gobble up toxic proteins prevents development of Alzheimer's disease in mice that are predestined to develop it, report researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center. They say the treatment - which is given just once - could potentially do the same in people at the beginning stages of the disease.
In an attempt to increase the sensitivity of cancer biomarker detection and to decrease the need for large samples from which to detect those molecules, a multi-institutional research team has shown that a "forest" of single-walled carbon nanotubes can be used to detect lower levels of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) than is possible using the current commercial assay.
Positron emission tomography could be used to predict the response of metastatic renal cell carcinoma to tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy within a couple of weeks of a patient beginning treatment, research suggests.
In comments delivered to the Obama Administration, the Institute of Food Technologists today offered its support for the President's Task Force on Childhood Obesity and efforts by First Lady Michelle Obama designed to raise awareness on the critical issue of childhood obesity.
