Genetically engineered spider silk could help overcome a major barrier to the use of gene therapy in everyday medicine, according to a new study that reported development and successful initial laboratory tests of such a material. It appears in ACS' journal Bioconjugate Chemistry.
In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center's Institute for Reproductive Health announced today the launch of a year-long study to measure the efficacy of a new app, Dot, for avoiding unintended pregnancy as compared to efficacy rates of other family planning methods.
In the coming week, from 16 to 19 November 2015, Düsseldorf will again become the central meeting point of the international health business. Then, for the first time on the new set of dates from Monday to Thursday (previously: Wednesday to Saturday), the world's largest medical trade fair, MEDICA, and the international leading supplier specialist trade fair, COMPAMED taking place at the same time, are going to start.
A new study from the Indiana University Center for Aging Research and the Regenstrief Institute has found that almost half of all long-stay nursing home residents experience at least one transfer to an Emergency Department over the course of a year regardless of their cognitive status. While a high percentage of long-stay nursing home residents were sent to the ED, only about a third of these individuals were subsequently admitted to the hospital.
A unique new method to treat a specific group of patients who are at greater risk of rejecting a donor lung, allowing them to live longer after transplant without rejection, has been developed by the Toronto Lung Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network.
