From the many images sent home from foreign battlefields over the last several decades, Americans have viewed the plight of their country's combat-weary veterans as stark and often iconic scenes that seem somehow frozen in time. But recent research at Washington State University suggests that, for many U.S. veterans, combat is a defining experience that often sets the trajectory of the balance of their lives.
In a new study presented today at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, researchers sought to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and functional outcomes of a Charnley total hip replacement (THR)─ a traditional hip prosthesis consisting of a polyethylene acetabular (plastic) cup and a metal femoral head─in patients under age 50 at a minimum of 35 years after the initial surgery.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) announced their support for many of the provisions contained in H.R. 3400, the "Empowering Patients First Act," which was unveiled in Congress last week.
Noting the release of a new Council on Foreign Relations paper by Yanzhong Huang, titled "Enter the Dragon and the Elephant: China and India's Participation in Global Health Governance," Stewart Patrick, senior fellow and director of CFR's Program on International Institutions and Global Governance, writes in his "The Internationalist" blog, "The rapid emergence of China and India as players in global health is a surprising development."
Zebrafish exposed to the leading cannabinoids found in cannabis in the earliest stages of development suffer a significant drop in neural activity later in life, according to a University of Alberta study that has implications for prenatal development in humans.
