Cardiac imaging researchers at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute are recommending that physicians not overlook fatty deposits around the heart when evaluating patients for risk of major heart problems.
"The United Nations on Thursday announced that it will allocate $55 million to bolster operations in eight countries with neglected humanitarian emergencies," the U.N. News Centre reports, adding, "Afghanistan, Cameroon, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Sudan will all receive funds from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help provide food, water, health and other basic services."
A sticky, protein-rich gel created by Johns Hopkins researchers appears to help stem cells stay on or in rat hearts and restore their metabolism after transplantation, improving cardiac function after simulated heart attacks, according to results of a new study.
The James J. Peters Veterans Hospital in Bronx, New York, is actively recruiting participants for a phase IIb clinical trial testing NIC5-15, a disease modifying candidate for Alzheimer's disease.
