The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has awarded its prestigious 'IOF Linda Edwards Memorial Award' to the Arthritis Foundation of India Trust (AFI), one of 193 IOF member societies around the world. The award was presented today at the IOF Worldwide Osteoporosis Patient Society Conference, being held from September 22-25, 2009 in Beijing, China.
A multidisciplinary team of researchers at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has been awarded a $738,000 National Science Foundation grant to develop a breathalyzer-type device to detect the onset of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar episodes, in people with diabetes.
The Wall Street Journal: The Senate continues to weigh a bill with wide-ranging provisions, including a postponement of the scheduled Medicare pay cut for doctors, but Democratic leaders appear to be having difficulty finding a plan that will appeal to members. "Repeated short-term fixes in recent years have left doctors frustrated and some … are refusing to take new Medicare patients.
A joint agreement recently signed by the Ugandan Ministry of Health and the U.S. Government's Global Health Initiative (GHI) to carry out collaborative initiatives targeted at "bringing quality health care to Ugandans" is "a significant effort that should, with proper implementation, improve health care services, particularly by reducing pregnancy-related deaths," a Daily Monitor editorial states.
