Reuters on Friday examined obstetric fistula and its impact on women living with the condition (Ringler, Reuters, 3/30). Obstetric fistulas develop when a fetus becomes lodged during labor in the narrow birth canal of a girl or young woman, causing pressure that blocks the flow of blood to vital tissues and tearing holes in the bowel, urethra or both, causing incontinence.
Cancer researchers at Queen's University Belfast have made a breakthrough which could signal new treatments for women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
A survey by the Urban Institute found that 1.9 million seniors found themselves having to choose between buying food and buying medicine. The survey was conducted in 1993—a time when the economy was booming! Due to the current economic woes, it is more difficult than ever for seniors to make it on their own.
Industry advocates say health reform could place a disproportionate burden on children's hospitals, because they will face cuts along with other hospitals, but do not stand to benefit from expansions in insurance coverage, USA Today reports.
Ellipse Technologies, Inc. announced it had completed the initial clinical study enrollment for its MAGECTM (MAGnetic Expansion Control) Technology in "At Risk Early Onset Scoliosis Patients."
