Following a House Foreign Affairs Committee vote last week to reinstate the global gag rule in the FY12 Foreign Relations Authorization Act, GlobalPost's "Global Pulse" blog features an interview with "Craig Lasher, the director of U.S. government relations at Population Action International, about the global gag rule, its history, and what making it a legislative policy will mean."
There is strong evidence that the protein complex APC/C may function as a tumor suppressor in multiple cancers including lymphoma, colorectal and breast cancer, and now melanoma. A new study has revealed that a genetic mutation leading to repression of a specific protein, Cdh1, which interacts with APC/C, is present in melanoma cancer cells.
In a breakthrough development that could dramatically reduce the number of leg amputations and painful bypass graft surgeries performed annually on European patients, a first-of-its kind drug-eluting stent for a widespread form of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is now available to physicians throughout the European Union.
The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) recently contributed to a report produced by the Health Council of Canada (HCC) entitled "Decisions, Decisions: Family Doctors as Gatekeepers in the Use of Prescription Drugs and Diagnostic Imaging in Canada." This report, which was released today, supports one of the CAR's main objectives: to implement medical imaging guidelines at a national level to guide physicians in selecting the most effective diagnostic imaging exam the first time.
The administration's effort to stretch the enrollment period after the botched rollout of the healthcare.gov website has complicated efforts by insurers and left some consumers concerned about their coverage.
