aTyr Pharma, Inc., a biotherapeutics company engaged in the discovery and development of Physiocrine-based therapeutics to address rare diseases, announced today the European Commission (EC) has granted orphan drug designation to Resolaris for the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD).
In a paper that will be published on Thursday, April 29, 2004 in the New England Journal of Medicine, a team of scientists from Stanford University and Applied Biosystems, an Applera Corporation business, describe the identification of six genes associated with survival in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"Current wisdom says that cells are closed entities that communicate through the secretion of soluble signalling molecules. Recent findings indicate that cells can exchange more complex information - whole packages of genetic material and signalling proteins.
Dr. John Dick, Senior Scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute, the research arm of Princess Margaret Hospital, co-led a multinational team that has developed the first leukemia therapy that targets a protein, CD123, on the surface of cancer stem cells that drive acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which is an aggressive disease with a poor outcome.
