MicroRNA-218 especially low in medulloblastoma

Between the blueprint of the genome and the products of its expression lie microRNAs, which can boost or lower the rate at which genes become stuff. In fact, many cancers use microRNA to magnify the expression of faulty genes or shrink the expression of helpful genes that would otherwise suppress tumors. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the December issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry shows that in medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor of children, microRNA-218 is especially low.

Lancet Infectious Diseases examines spread of XDR-TB

The tennis legend Martina Navratilova has revealed on Wednesday that she is undergoing therapy for breast cancer. She has always been revered for her health and performance. Just a month short of her 50th birthday, Navratilova won her last grand slam title, the mixed doubles at the 2006 US Open, and in retirement she wrote a 'how-to' book about good living. She was a winner of a record nine Wimbledon singles titles, 59 grand slam titles, including 18 singles trophies and arguably the greatest female athlete of all time.

Long-duration breastfeeders sacrifice considerable income

Pediatricians and other breastfeeding advocates often encourage new mothers to breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of their infants' lives based on the purported health benefits to both mothers and children. Many breastfeeding proponents also argue that breastfeeding has financial advantages over formula-feeding-breastfeeding is free, they say.
