Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapeutics for autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, today announced that Abbott Biotech Ventures Inc., has joined Alvine's current investors: Interwest Partners, Panorama Capital, Prospect Venture Partners, Sofinnova Ventures, Black River Asset Management and Flagship Ventures in the company's Series A Extension financing. What began as a chat between husband and wife has evolved into an intriguing scientific discovery. New research may be useful for protecting against the toxic effects of snake venom. Investigators have identified the specific protein that's targeted by snake venom and causes cells to detach from each other and induce internal bleeding.
It's the peak season for snowstorms, and snowblowers are working overtime. But Loyola University Health System hand surgeon Dr. Randy Bindra cautions that snowblowers can cause severe hand injuries, including loss of fingers that can require one or more surgeries and months of rehabilitation.
