More than half of elderly patients (age 65 and older) who visited an emergency department because of injuries sustained in a fall suffered adverse events - including additional falls, hospitalization, and death - within 6 months.
After Nelson Mandela was released from prison February 11, 1990, all children born in the great Johannesburg area were enrolled in a 20-year longitudinal study. Officially known as "Birth to Twenty," the study and its 3,273 youth, are colloquially referred to as "Mandela's Children." It's the largest and longest running study of child and adolescent health and development in Africa, and one of the few large-scale longitudinal studies in the world.
In preparation for more tools that detect and measure the biology associated with Alzheimer's and other dementias earlier and with more accuracy, an Alzheimer's Association-led Workgroup has published appropriate use criteria for lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and spinal fluid analysis in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
The White House asks two top North Carolina Democrats to urge Gov. Pat McCrory and state lawmakers to reconsider a health law provision to cover more low income people. Meanwhile, Ohio reports that more than 1,100 residents signed up for Medicaid on the first day a signup site went live.
Doctors write millions of prescriptions a year for drugs to calm the behavior of people with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. But non-drug approaches actually work better, and carry far fewer risks, experts conclude in a new report.
