Scientists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service "have developed a fully cooked food-aid product called Instant Corn Soy Blend that supplements meals, particularly for young children," a USDA news story reports (Bliss, 8/4).
Children with dyslexia often find it difficult to count the number of syllables in spoken words or to determine whether words rhyme. These subtle difficulties are seen across languages with different writing systems and they indicate that the dyslexic brain has trouble processing the way that sounds in spoken language are structured.
Writing in the American Public Health Association International Health Section's "IH-Blog," Jessica Keralis, IH Communications Committee chair, highlights three recently released advocacy videos by Médecins Sans Frontières discussing child vaccines and a subsequent conversation between MSF and the GAVI Alliance over vaccine pricing.
Much has been written about the enormous effort required to take scientific discovery from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside.
Chris Endean of the GAVI Alliance writes ahead of the GAVI Partners Forum in a CNN opinion piece about efforts to vaccinate members of the Maasai tribes in Tanzania's Arusha National Park. Noting Maasai tribes are "constantly on the move searching for water and fresh pasture for their cattle," he describes "severe logistical challenges" health workers face when trying to reach their patients and notes."
