Metropolitan Health Networks, Inc., a leading provider of healthcare services in Florida, today announced the financial results for their first quarter ended March 31, 2010.
Encouraging new data shows the teenage birth rate in the U.S. fell to the lowest level on record in 2009 - but is still one of the highest in developed countries. Numbers dropped to 39.1 births per 1,000 females from 61.8 births in 1991, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The latest figures record that 410,000 teenage girls aged 15 to 19 years old gave birth in the United States in 2009. The rate is especially high among black and Hispanic teens. Geography plays a key role too with young mothers more common in some states than others.
"Ten years ago, I took my first role as a midwife in a refugee camp in Iran. ... The situation for women and children was terrible - the maternal mortality rate was among the worst in the world," Sabera Turkmani, president of Afghan Midwives Association, writes in this Al Jazeera opinion piece.
They've been called the "special forces" of the immune system: invariant natural killer T cells. Although there are relatively few of them in the body, they are more powerful than many other immune cells.
During the first stage of labor, a combined spinal-epidural (CSE) technique offers faster and better-quality analgesia (pain relief) compared to traditional epidural analgesia, according to a report in the March issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).
