Scientists studying cancer development have known about micronuclei for some time. These erratic, small extra nuclei, which contain fragments or whole chromosomes that were not incorporated into daughter cells after cell division, are associated with specific forms of cancer and are predictive of poorer prognosis.
Small, light and simple. These are the three key characteristics of MovinSense, a microelectronic device developed by Tomorrow Options, a spin-off from INESC TEC/FEUP. The device is placed on the chest of the bedridden patient with limited mobility and it registers their position, communicating with nursing equipment via wireless.
Kaiser Health News: "Proponents say that the legislation would spur competition among insurers and bring down costs for consumers. Reps. Tom Perriello, D-Va., and Betsy Markey, D-Colo., who are sponsoring the bill, said in a press release it would 'end special treatment for the insurance industry that allows them to fix prices, collude with each other, and set their own markets without fear of being investigated.' But many antitrust experts say that ending the exemption - by repealing the 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act - wouldn't significantly increase competition or reduce premiums."
Cells sense and respond to the mechanical properties of the cellular microenvironment in the body. Changes in these properties, which occur in a number of human pathologies, including cancer, can elicit abnormal responses from cells.
