Escherichia coli (E. coli) are bacteria that live all around and inside of us. Most E. coli are harmless, but some strains can cause illness, and can even, in extreme cases, be deadly. With recent outbreaks of E. coli around the world, there is a fear of acquiring an infection from these bacteria.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D. today announced CMS will soon undertake a pilot program in partnership with hospitals in 13 states and the District of Columbia to determine the effectiveness of the voluntary compliance programs used by many hospitals.
Researchers at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin have developed a biophysical treatment method that allows up to 50 percent more toxins to be removed from the blood of dialysis patients. Use of this technology may result in patients with kidney disease seeing a considerable reduction in the length of dialysis sessions. An initial patent application for this technology was filed in 2011.
Cells made by fusing a normal human muscle cell with a muscle cell from a person with Duchenne muscular dystrophy -a rare but fatal form of muscular dystrophy - were able to significantly improve muscle function when implanted into the muscles of a mouse model of the disease.
