This Nutrition and Cancer article summarizes the connection between a Mediterranean dietary pattern and cancer risk in observational epidemiological studies. All studies that met the following criteria were reviewed: human cohort and case-control studies, which examined the effect of the Mediterranean diet as an entire food pattern.
Researchers have found that older adults who took a brisk walk three times a week did better on memory tests and increased the size of their hippocampus, a portion of the brain involved with memory formation.
In a study published in Nature, researchers lead by Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, FNRS/FRS researcher and WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, in collaboration with the groups of Peter Carmeliet (VIB/K.U.Leuven) and Jody J. Haigh (VIB/UGent) identify a new role for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in regulating skin cancer stem cells.
An interesting new study reports that vaccine hesitancy in the UK is driven not, as is commonly thought, by the so-called ‘infodemic' of misinformation that has characterized much public messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the personality of the individual, the ability to trust scientific and government leadership, political affiliations, and openness relative to the process of vaccine development was found to be key in the development of this attitude.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring a seminar called "Breathe Cleaner, Live Longer: Understanding Air Pollution after 40 Years." The event is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology.
