The day of celebration is to congratulate all ex-smokers, whether they are amongst the 400,000 who have signed up to kick the habit with the European Commission's "Ex-Smokers are Unstoppable" campaign, or have quit using other means.
After Nelson Mandela was released from prison February 11, 1990, all children born in the great Johannesburg area were enrolled in a 20-year longitudinal study. Officially known as "Birth to Twenty," the study and its 3,273 youth, are colloquially referred to as "Mandela's Children." It's the largest and longest running study of child and adolescent health and development in Africa, and one of the few large-scale longitudinal studies in the world.
Alcohol and tobacco often go hand-in-hand. Studies have shown that approximately 90 percent of problem drinkers also smoke or chew tobacco. But tobacco use is not adequately addressed when patients undergo liver transplantation due to alcoholic liver disease, say authors of a new report.
A study published on 21 May in Child Development shows that the early production of beat gestures with the hands (i.e., gestures normally associated with emphasis that do not represent the semantic content of speech) by infants between 14 and 58 months of age in natural interactions with their carers predicts that in their later development, nearing the age of five, these children obtain better results insofar as their oral narrative skills.
