More Atlanta residents are stressed about the economy this year according to the American Psychological Association's (APA) Stress in America survey, while the number of Atlantans reporting money or work as significant stressors in 2009 has dropped. More than 60 percent of city residents continue to report that money, work and the economy are significant sources of stress - a cause of concern for psychologists who worry about the effects of long-term stress and how it can contribute to chronic health disorders.
While the Affordable Care Act will expand health insurance coverage for low-income persons through Medicaid and state health-insurance exchanges, including much-needed care for 1.8 million uninsured veterans in the U.S., the new insurance coverage option also may have a number of unintended negative effects on health care for veterans, said Kenneth W. Kizer, director of the Institute for Population Health Improvement at UC Davis Health System.
A team from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) focused on drug addiction research have pioneered a new way to study frustration as a factor in substance use disorders.
Even objective, automated vision testing-using a device called an autorefractor-gives variable results in patients with Down syndrome, reports a study in the May issue of Optometry and Vision Science, the official journal of the American Academy of Optometry. The journal is published by Wolters Kluwer.
