Researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology and colleagues have designed and developed a new class of molecules that use a never-before-known mechanism that may halt or destroy breast cancer tumors, particularly for patients with drug-resistant or dangerously metastatic stages of the disease.
Most of the tests that doctors use to diagnose cancer - such as mammography, colonoscopy, and CT scans - are based on imaging. More recently, researchers have also developed molecular diagnostics that can detect specific cancer-associated molecules that circulate in bodily fluids like blood or urine.
Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine on Thursday said that a 424-bed $1.2 billion teaching hospital planned to replace Charity Hospital in New Orleans will not turn a profit, as the original plan had stated, and that it would require state money to become sustainable, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports (Moller, New Orleans Times-Picayune, 6/20).
"The new swine influenza virus [H1N1], which appeared suddenly after years of warning about a potential pandemic of avian influenza, upset the WHO's assumptions that most people have the same understanding of the word pandemic," says the New York Times in a report that examines the difficultly health experts have had when attempting to agree upon what constitutes a pandemic.
Starting dialysis treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) should be a shared decision made by an informed patient based on discussions with a physician and family members.
