A group of Salzburg-based researchers led by the psychologist Eva Jonas investigates the neuro-psychological mechanisms behind existential threats. What exactly happens in the process between threat and defensive reaction is at the center of an ongoing study funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF.
A dog is mankind's best friend : the old saying has once again been borne out through a medical discovery concerning the genetic origins of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). In using dogs as a research model in the framework of the European LUPA project, a team from the University of Liège's GIGA-Research Unit has been able to bring to light new mutations in a specific gene responsible for the development of the disease in human beings.
Mayo Clinic researchers in Rochester, Minnesota, collaborated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center on a recent study, "Troponin T as a Predictor of End-Stage Renal Disease and All-Cause Death in African-American and Whites From Hypertensive Families." For the first time, this study identified the presence of a specific protein in the blood used to look for heart damage.
A unique nanostructure developed by a team of international researchers, including those at the University of Cincinnati, promises improved all-in-one detection, diagnoses and drug-delivery treatment of cancer cells.
Out-of-specification (OOS) results can have a significant impact on the profitability and even reputation of a pharmaceutical or biotech company. Yet workflows to prepare samples manually, which rely on volumetric flasks and subjective meniscus reading, have not changed significantly in nearly 100 years.
