Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced results from the positive Phase III AVAglio study. Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute have found in animals that infusing cardiac-derived stem cells with micro-size particles of iron and then using a magnet to guide those stem cells to the area of the heart damaged in a heart attack boosts the heart's retention of those cells and could increase the therapeutic benefit of stem cell therapy for heart disease.
Microvesicles are smallest cell elements which are present in all body fluids and are different, depending on whether a person is healthy or sick. This could contribute to detecting numerous diseases, such as, e.g., carcinomas, at an early stage, and to treating them more efficiently. The problem is that the diameter of the relevant microvesicles generally lies below 100 nm, which makes them technically detectable, but their exact size and concentration hardly possible to determine. A new device is now to provide the metrological basis for these promising biomarkers.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved the Fresenius Medical Care Chronic Kidney Disease Data Registry, supported by its Acumen applications. As a participating registry in CMS's 2010 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), the approval of the nephrology-specific Acumen applications enables participating nephrologists to report quality outcomes directly to the PQRI program.
When a loved one dies, memories of that person become particularly valuable in connecting the mourners with the deceased. A new Weill Cornell Medicine online application, called Living Memory Home, offers a virtual and personal memorial space that allows mourners to deposit their memories and feelings about their loss and honor their loved one.
