Could engineered human stem cells hold the key to cancer survival? Scientists at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN), the world's first bioengineering and nanotechnology research institute, have discovered that neural stem cells possess the innate ability to target tumor cells outside the central nervous system. This finding, which was demonstrated successfully on breast cancer cells, was recently published in leading peer reviewed journal, Stem Cells.
"High levels of unmet need for contraception around the world have a very negative impact on women's and children's health and survival as well as on the prosperity of communities and nations," Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) writes in the Huffington Post's "Global Motherhood" blog.
The decision on Tuesday by Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to increase the level of severity at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant "does not mean the public health risk is any worse or that the disaster resembles Chernobyl in 1986," the WHO and other agencies said in response to the announcement, Reuters reports.
Young mothers have a greater chance of having a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder according to new research from the University of South Australia.
The Medtronic Inc. has won the CE Mark approval for a peripheral nerve stimulation device for treating chronic back pain. This medical device maker from Minneapolis, Minn. said the implantable device will fit into its neurostimulation business, which operates out of the company's restorative therapies division. That unit was responsible for about $5.42 billion in sales during the nine-month period ended Jan. 28.
