There is "some good news" in the fight against HIV in the Americas, Cesar Chelala - an international public health consultant - writes in a Miami Herald opinion piece, adding that "most surprisingly, it's coming from Haiti, one of the countries hardest hit by the epidemic." Chelala writes that United Nations data show that about 2.2% of Haiti's population - or 120,000 people - are living with HIV/AIDS and that AIDS-related deaths in the country have decreased in recent years.
Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer and leading cause of cancer death in men and women, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for up to 90% of cases. Somatic mutations heavily impact the sensitivity of NSCLC patients to various drug treatments, and are critical for choosing the most effective targeted therapies for this cancer.
Usually, mould fungi are nothing to cheer about - but now they can be used as "chemical factories". Scientists at the Vienna University of Technology have succeeded in introducing bacterial genes into the fungus Trichoderma, so that the fungus can now produce important chemicals for the pharmaceutical industry. The raw material used by the fungus is abundant - it is chitin, which makes up the shells of crustaceans.
