In a study that included approximately 95,000 children with older siblings, receipt of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine was not associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), regardless of whether older siblings had ASD, findings that indicate no harmful association between receipt of MMR vaccine and ASD even among children already at higher risk for ASD, according to a study in the April 21 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on child health.
A large community-based registry of patients treated with drug-eluting stents is providing important insight into how long patients with complex coronary artery disease typically stick to their doctors' orders to take clopidogrel, a drug that prevents unwanted blood clots; why they stop taking the drug; and the long-term consequences of that decision.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of late-life dementia. The disorder is thought to be caused by a protein known as the amyloid-beta protein, or Abeta, which clumps together in the brain, forming plaques that are thought to destroy neurons. This destruction starts early, too, and can presage clinical signs of the disease by up to 20 years.
EMD Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA of Germany, today announced plans to expand its industrial microbiological testing portfolio. This follows Merck KGaA's announcement it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the microbiology business of Germany-based Biotest AG.
Screening African Americans for microalbuminuria at either 5- or 10-year intervals would be highly cost-effective using a modified version of the CKD Health Policy Model, US researchers report.
