A new therapy to treat cancer has been developed by Australian scientists and it promises to have far fewer unpleasant side effects than conventional treatments and should also be much cheaper.
Researchers from the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine in London in the United Kingdom revealed that the presence and size of a juxtaluminal black (hypoechoic) area (JBA) on carotid ultrasound of asymptomatic carotid artery plaques can predict the occurrence of ipsilateral ischemic stroke.
According to the UK Department of Health, the first results from a scheme, called the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), show that by performing beyond expectation, family doctors earned their surgeries thousands of pounds in bonuses.
Using yeast genetics and a novel scheme to selectively remove a single protein from the cell division process called meiosis, a cell biologist at The Florida State University found that when a key molecular player known as Pds5 goes missing, chromosomes fail to segregate and pair up properly, and birth defects such as Down syndrome can result.
