A pediatric vaccine with University of Rochester roots has proven to be highly successful at reducing cases of bacterial meningitis across all age groups.That is the conclusion of a seven-year study, the results of which appeared today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
At least 50 people have been diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer called ocular melanoma. They are all residents of two locations - Huntersville, North Carolina, and Auburn, Alabama. The cancer is rare and occurs in only six per 1 million population. The high rate of incidence of this cancer in these two locations has stumped researchers.
The iron-containing molecule heme is necessary for life. Cells require heme to perform the chemical reactions that produce energy, among other critical tasks.
Stories of athletes bravely "playing through the pain" are relatively common and support the widespread belief that they experience pain differently than non-athletes. Yet, the scientific data on pain perception in athletes has been inconsistent, and sometimes contradictory.
