The buildup of fat in the blood makes a bad situation worse - it not only raises a person's risk for heart attack or stroke but also impairs the growth of new blood vessels. How excess fat in the blood - a condition known as hyperlipidemia - blocks vessel growth was unclear, but new work by researchers at Temple University School of Medicine shows that a molecule known as caspase-1 plays a central role and that preventing its activity could be the key to building new blood vessels and restoring blood supply to oxygen-starved tissues.
NGOs are outraged at developments of the current Board meeting of the Global Fund Board to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. Many donor governments are promoting the establishment of a ceiling on the next round of disease fight grants to developing countries.
Scientists and policymakers both contend that investments in nanoscale science and engineering will create revolutions in areas as diverse as materials, drug delivery, cancer treatment, and space travel. The hope is that many of the problems of today can be addressed using nanotechnology enabled products.
A recent study by IDC Health Insights that evaluated HIE vendors based on fit to market needs and ability to provide clients with a positive ownership experience placed Medicity as a leading vendor in the HIE technologies market.
Raytheon BBN Technologies has been awarded $3 million in government funding to explore new methods of modeling the brain's ability to make sense of large amounts of haphazard, partial information.
