Two NJIT biomedical researchers have received the prestigious Coulter Foundation Translational Awards for promising patent applications that may some day extend peoples' lives.The Coulter program provides funding for professors in established biomedical engineering departments within the U.S. Initial funding for each professor will be at least $200,000 over a two-year period.
In this post in the Guardian's "The Observer," Mark Honigsbaum, a research associate at the University of Zurich's Institute for Medical History, interviews Peter Seeberger, the director of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany, about a recent announcement that Seeberger and colleague François Lévesque "have discovered a simple and cost-effective way of synthesizing artemisinin from the waste products of the" sweet wormwood plant from which it is extracted.
Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company with fully integrated commercial and drug development operations with a primary focus in hematology and oncology, today announced initiation of patient enrollment in the second part of the Company's randomized Phase 2 clinical program of ozarelix, a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) antagonist, in men with prostate cancer for whom hormonal treatment is indicated.
Wednesday on The Diane Rehm Show, Kaiser Health News staff writer Mary Agnes Carey joined The Washington Post's Alec MacGillis and Health Affairs' Susan Dentzer to talk about the impact the recently passed health overhaul law will have on a variety of consumers, ranging from young people to senior citizens as well as employers, the uninsured and people with pre-existing conditions (NPR, 5/5).
They may be in small towns. They may only have a couple of surgeons. But for common operations, they may be safer and less expensive than their larger cousins, a new study finds.
